Virgin Media has said that its current infrastructure will allow for broadband speeds of 150Mbps up to two years before BT completes its rival fibre network. This was said by VM's chief executive Neil Berkett who told BBC News that this would mean that the company could offer a 150 meg service well ahead of BT.

Mr Berkett said that because VM already has a fibre-to-the cabinet network already in place it will be able to offer a "much, much faster upstream speed, running at a minimum of 100Mbps downstream and possibly more" up to two years before BT had completed its fibre rollout, expected to be in 2012. This signals that VM could be providing a top-tier 150 meg service next year as Mr Berkett said he would be surprised if these faster speeds were not available in 2010. Howveer, he said "When we look at the market I don't see us getting the returns right now for 100 or 150Mbps." A 150 meg speed equates to a speed which is 2500 times faster than dial-up.

Virgin launched a 50 meg top-tier product earlier this year when it rolled out Euro-DOCSIS 3 technology . It carries a theoretically top speed of 200Mbps.  The company is currently migrating its lower-tier customers to 10 and 20 meg connections using this same technology. BT is using FTTC technology to offer a top speed of 40 megs - and potentially 60 megs - and this should be available in 29 exchanges in the next 9 to 12 months and will be available to around 500,000 homes and businesses in areas of Belfast, Cardiff, Edinburgh, Glasgow, London and Greater Manchester. BT says that this speed will be rolled out nationwide by 2012.
