Vrign Media has begun a customer trial of 200mb.
The trial, to 100 "lead adopters" in Ashford in Kent, will also test out applications for a such speeds which include home survaillance, video conferencing and full high-defintiino and 3D content. The trial will run for at least six months. The trial will also look at the feasibility of such a speed as currently there are no wireless routers capable of handling a 200Mb connection and computers have to have very high specifications to handle such speeds. Neil Berkett, chief executive officer at Virgin Media said, “We’re really excited to be embarking on this journey of discovery. With the only true next generation network in the UK, we’re at the forefront of innovation and understanding when it comes to ultrafast broadband services and the 200Mb pilot will give us further insight into how true ‘wideband’ services might be used by consumers.” Virgin is currently rolling out its 50Mb top-tier service across the UK. This is being done in stages because a new technology, DOCSIS3, needs to be installed in order to make a 50Mb connection possible. A 200Mb connection equates to a speed of around 3500 times faster than dial-up.
