Virgin Media has announced that it will begin to expand its coverage area. Virgin Media says that it has identified around 500,000 homes which are currently close to its current network and it will pass around 50,000 of them during the rest of 2009.

The company says that its strong cachflow position makes this network expansion possible.

The cable network has not been extended in the 2000s due to the industry getting into massive levels of debt when it built its network in the 1990s. This network covers around half of the country and is concentrated in urban areas.
