Virgin Media is to launch for high-definition channels.

The channels are the high definition (HD) versions of Living - which is to be the first wholly-owned VMTV channel to start HD broadcasting- , National Geographic, FX and MTV. Virgin added that it is "currently in active talks" with UKTV about launching

Good Food HD.

The channels will be available at no extra cost to people who have the XL package and the first of these HD channels will launch at the end of July.

Virgin Media has been critisised for failing to launch linear HD channels and has only carried BBC HD as opposed to nearly 30 HD channels on Sky. However, the cable operator has provided on demand HD content for some time.

Neil Berkett, chief executive officer of Virgin Media, said: "As more homes become HD-ready, the launch of four new HD channels marks the next stage in the evolution of our pioneering TV service. Our line-up of HD channels and hugely popular on demand content is a unique and winning combination and we'll continue to bring more sport, films, entertainment and documentaries to our customers."
