MTV is to introduce more music programming to its schedule.

The channel is to double its music output, with music content shows increasing from 20% to 40% with a view to a 50/50 split.

In recent years, MTV has moved away from music programming and has been known at MTV One. MTV Networks UK and Ireland has preferred to show music shows on its spin-off channels with MTV One being a reality-entertainment channel.

The additional musical content on the channel will include "contextualised music videos", concerts and chart rundowns.

MTV Networks UK and Ireland executive vice-president Heather Jones said: "Historically the performance of music videos and content was declining, but the charts are flying and we know which artists work for us for concerts. We can increase music without threatening the channel's performance, which is a real turning point."
