Five has confirmed that it is "actively looking" at launching a pre-school stand-alone channel.

This was confirmed by Five's chiewf executive Dawn Airey.

The plan is to launch the channel during the day on either Five US or Fiver rather than purchasing new spectrum. This would operate in the same way that the BBC's childrens' channels share spectrum with BBC3 and BBC4.

Ms Airey said she expected to make a decision by the end of the year, adding "The economics of it are quite compelling. It is something we are still actively looking at."

This was confirmed at the same time as the broadacster said that it will cut its programming budget by 25% due to declining advertising revenues. This will result in a budget of £165 million this calendar year, dowm from £220 million last year.
