NBC Universal has announced that The Sci-fi Channel will be rebranded as Syfy in April.

The relaunch. which ahd been expected for some time following a similar rebranding for the channel in America, will take place on 13 April and will have a tagline of "Imagine Greater."

The reason for the relaunch is to try to make the channel know for programming other than science fiction with other genres such as reality, mystery and supernatural, action and daventure being added to the programme mix.

Laurence Dawkin-Jones, UK managing director Universal Networks International, NBC Universal's channels division, said: "The rebrand allows us to build on the fantastic heritage of the channel and loyalty of our fans whilst further broadening the appeal of our existing range of great content."
