The BBC has backtracked on its earlier decision not to broadcast Top Of The Pops on Christmas Day. The BBC had said recently that there would be no edition of the music show on Xmas Day but bosses have changed their mind and Top Of The Pops will form part of the Christmas Day schedule. As usual, the show will climax with the Christmas number one single. A second edition, which will review the year in pop, will air on new year's eve.

BBC1 controller, Jay Hunt, said: "With shows on Christmas Day and New Year's Eve, Top of the Pops has never been bigger. The shows will form the centerpiece of a massive musical offering during the festive season that we hope viewers are really going to enjoy."

The BBC had originally planned eight episodes of the archive spin-off TOTP2. Sunsequently, Simon Cowell ahd offered to buy the format with an aim to show broadcasting it on ITV.

The show was axed as a weekly programme in 2006 and the BBC said that any future editions of the programme would have to "earn their place." Bosses reinstated that the show would not return as a weekly series, despite Culture Secretay Andy Burnham calling for its reinstatement as a weekly programme on BBC1.
