BBC Radio 1 is to broadcast a midweek chart update, to be broadcast on Wednesday afternoons.

To be called "The Official Chart Update", the 30-minute programme will feature information on the week's climbers and new entries and will be broadcast between 3.30pm and 4pm. It will feature both the singles and album charts. The full chart will continue to be premiered on Sunday teatime.

BBC Radio 1 head of music George Ergatoudis said: "I've no doubt the Official Chart Uodate will encourage fans to go out and support their favourite acts, because for the first time they'll really be able to really see the difference they make in the weekly chart battle and then tune in on Sundays to find out who has won."

Martin Talbot, the managing director of the Official Charts Company, which complies the top 40 for Radio 1, added: "The launch of this official chart update will mean that, for the first time, music fans will get a reliable insight into how the race for number one is shaping up, ahead of the announcement of the weekly official singles and albums charts on BBC Radio 1 every Sunday. It will bring the chart to music fans across the country throughout the week."

Radio 1 has broadcast the official top 40 throughout its history, initially revealing the new chart on Tuesday lunchtimes with a recap on Sunday teatimes. It wasn't until 1987 that the new chart was first broadcast in the Sunday teatime slot.

The first edition of The Midweek Chart Update will be broadcast on Wednesday 10 March.
