The latest RAJAR listening figures have reported an overall fall in listening to radio via digital although listening DAB's listening share has increased.

20.9% of all radio listening in the final quarter of 2009 was via digital, down from 21.1% the previous quarter although the figure was up from 18.3% for the final quarter of 2008 representing a 14% year-on-year increase. The 21.1% figure represents 17.1 million people.

Regarding individual platforms, DAB listening rose slightly, from 13.3% to 13.7% but listening via digital TV fell from 3.6% to 3.4%. Listening via the internet rose slightly to 2.1%

This fall will be a worry for those championing the cause for the start of radio digital switchover as the Government's digital economy Bill currently going through Parliament has set out a plan which is hoped will see national and regional stations ceasing broadcasting on analogue at the end of 2015. However, for this to happen, more than 50% of all radio listening must be digital by the end of 2013.

Other listening figures revealed in the RAJARS see Heart taking over as the most listened-to station in London, relegating previous front-runners, Magic 105.4, to third place. Capital Radio stays in second although the Global-owned station has the most listened-to breakfast show in London. In terms of share, Magic remains top with LBC in second. Smooth Radio and Gold continuted their decline, with a 30% and 27% year-on-year fall respectively. BBC London's year-on-year drop was 22% although there was an increase this quarter when compared with Q3.

Nationally, Radio 2 remains the UK's number one station with Sir Terry Wogan ending on a high, matching his highest ever listening figure of 8.1 million. However, Radio 2's overall listening figure fell from 13.62 million to 13.46 million. Radio 1 also dipped slightly, to 10.76 million and Radio 4 fell back below the 10 million mark attained in Q3, down to 9.84 million this time round. Radio 7 comes out top of the BBC's digital stations with a reach of 931,000. Regarding the national commercial stations, Classic FM suffered yet another fall with reahc down to 5.13 million, a year-on-year drop of more than 10%. TalkSPORT extended its lead over Absolute Radio to more than a million with Absolute Radio's decline since it changed its name continuing, with a reach of below 1.5 million.
