BNSkyB now has more than a million high-definition customers according to its latest figures.
This represents an increase of 243,000 subscribers. This massive increase will have been driven by Sky recently slashing the cost of a high-definition box to £49. Altogether Sky has 9.32 million customers, 80,000 more than three months ago. This increase was ahead of City expectations of a 50,000 net increase. Churn fell back to 10.6%. 1.4 million have the triple-play option - 15% of customer base - with more than half of all customers having Sky+. Revnue was up to £452 per customer per annum, a rise of £28 year-on-year. This is said to be due to more customers taking the Sky+ HD service as customers pay around a tenner a month extra for Sky's high-definition product which comprises approximately 30 channels. Pretax profits for the three months ending 31 March were £63 million, an increase of 13%, with total revenue of £1.4 billion. Sky chief executive Jeremy Darroch said: "We have made a strong start to calendar 2009. In difficult times, customers are making careful choices and responding to the combination of quality and value that we offer. Over 9.3 million families now choose Sky and they are taking more products from us than ever. "We are progressing well against the priorities we set out in January. The combination of the long-term trend towards high definition and the launch of our new HD box strategy generated a huge response from customers. Over one million customers now subscribe to our high definition service and around a quarter of new Sky+HD customers were new to Sky. In total, almost one in five homes in the UK use Sky+ to get more from their TV viewing experience. As a result of this strong demand, we have already been able to create around 750 new jobs in our customer service and installation teams, as part of the 1,000 we announced in January."
