Since its launch in May 2008, Freesat have announced the have reached 600,000 sales. The non-subscription digital satellite platform has managed to achieve this sales milestone in just 16 months. Freesat have increased its sales by 50% since May when they announced they had reached 400,000 sales. They reached the 200,000 mark in January. Emma Scott, Freesat MD has said: "To achieve this level of sales and viewing in such a short space of time is a fantastic achievement and testament to the ever-growing appeal of Freesat, both to consumers and broadcasters. "Great innovations such as high-definition TV, Freesat+, and a wide range of programming have previously only been available by paying a subscription and are now proving incredibly popular with viewers. Freesat homes consistently rate the service highly, with over 90% saying they would recommend to a friend. "We've had a brilliant summer and are confident that we'll continue to report outstanding growth, especially in the run up to the World Cup as we attract viewers that want to watch in high definition but without having to pay a subscription, no matter where they live in the UK." Freeview (Digital Terrestrial Television) however remails the biggest digital TV service with 43 million units sold since its launch in 2002 (23 million STB's and 20 million IDTV's). Freesat is now the UK's fourth biggest digital TV platform. By the end of the year it is expected that ITV1 HD (a full-time service) will launch on Freesat along with Channel 4 HD, Five USA & Fiver when sufficient space becomes available on the Astra 2D Satellite. The BBC are due to launch their iPlayer service soon on the platform also.
