Other figures reveal that Sky's HD service added 287,000 giving a total of 1.6 million homes, around 100,000 signed up for Sky broadband and 132,000 took out Sky's telephone package with 17% now having a bundled package from Sky. Churn, though, did increase from 9.9% to 11.3% following the most recent price increases.

Financially, revenue increased by 10% and was £1.38 billion with pre-tax operating profit for the third quarter being £180 million, up 39.5% year-on-year.

Sky chief executive Jeremy Darroch said: "Our business has made a good start to our 2010 financial year with another quarter of strong results. In what continues to be a tough economic environment, we have increased the number of customers joining Sky. High definition has continued to perform very well and more customers are saving money by choosing Sky for each of TV, broadband and telephony. The strong operational performance is reflected in today's financial results."
