BSkyB has reported strong financial results and a massive growth in HD subscribers. Sky signed up 172,000 new subscribers in the final three months of 2009 meaning that Sky is less than 300,000 away from having 10 million subscribers which, if current subscriber growth continues at its current rate, will be surpassed in the summer.
Sky also reported a massive increase in high definition customers, saying that almost 500,000 upgraded to Sky HD, meaning that almsot a quarter of all subscribers now have the Sky HD service. In addition, more than 500,000 got a Sky+ box meaning that 2/3 of Sky's subscribers have Sky+. Also, 18% of all subscribers have the tirple play of TV, telephone and internet services from Sky. Financially, the figures revealed a 10% year-on-year increase in revenue, now standing at £2.9 billion with average revenue per customer increasing 11% over that period, with the figure now at £492 per year per customer, which equates to more than £40 per month. Operating profit for the second half of the year was £401 million, a 4% increase. Sky's chief executive Jeremy Darroch, said: "It has been another good quarter in what remains a tough environment, with more customers joining Sky and strong demand across our entire product range. The standout performance came in high definition TV with almost half a million customers choosing Sky+ HD for our best home entertainment service. While the economic outlook remains uncertain, we remain well positioned with high-quality products offering customers great value for money."
