Freesat is considering offering pay channels on its platform.

The platform is considering offering Sky Sports on its platform following Ofcom forcing a new pricing model on BSkyB for these channels.

If Freesat was to offer pay channels then it would need approval by the BBC Trust and it would also have to consider a new name due to the fact that Freesat is a platform which offers free-to-air channels via satellite as opposed to the pay TV offering of Sky Digital. Pay TV services would be managed by a third party.

Emma Scott, Freesat's managing director and co-founder, told mediaguardian.co.uk: "We are looking at pay television. There is a lot of discussion around the Freesat and pay television issues taking place at board level. We haven't taken a final decision."

She added: "My personal view is that it would be odd for Freesat not to offer the [pay] option as well" as unbundled pay TV cound be "nirvana for some consumers" as "not everyone wants to subscribe to the full pay package. "

Freesat has around 1.25 million users and offers around 150 channels plus access to tbe BBC iPlayer.
