The first area to get high definition on Freeview will be in the northwest with HD services beginning in December. People served by the Winter Hill transmitter will go through digital switchover the previous month and some of the space free'd up will be used for the broadcast of three high definition channels - by the BBC. by ITV and by Channel 4.

The date pencillied in for the HD launch is 2 December.

Graham Plumb of the BBC Operations Group said on the BBC's internet blog: "The plan is still to launch Freeview HD on December 2nd at the Winter Hill transmitter serving Manchester and Liverpool. The plan has always been to roll Freeview HD out around the country following switchover and Winter Hill was selected as the first achievable transmitter. There will need to be a retrospective upgrade of regions that have already switched."
