BSkyB is said to be exploring an IPTV service for its proposed Picnic package.
Broadcast magazine that Sky is considering this service which would be run along similar lines to the model BT Vision uses - ie DTT plus add-on channels. Sky has recently got into the internet in a big way and has seen the success from its broadband product. Launching an IPTV service would give it a triple-play package of TV, telephone and internet, something the cable compasnies have offered for many years. One thign being considered is offering Picnic on PCs. Ofcom is still deciding whether to allow Sky to launch the pay service on DTT and this would consist of three streams which would use the spectrum it currently uses to transmit Sky Three, Sky News and Sky Sports News. Sky hopes to add a fourth stream using MPEG-4 transmission technology which is more efficient than existing technology but anyone wanting to access Picnic would have to buy a new set-sop box.
