STV is to launch a new 60-minute teatime news programme in place of the ITV1 Evening News, as well as ending the seperate 30-minute regional news programmes.

STV plans a 60-minute programme which will

The current 6pm regional news programme is split into two, long the lines of the two ITV franchises. A portion of the two seperate programmes is further split with optouts for Glasgow and Edinburgh and for Dundee and Aberdeen. Under the new plan the seperate bulletins will be scrapped. In their place there will be a ten-minute opt-out which would be split into six different areaas - the four mentioned above plus Inverness and the Borders. However, the latter would require premission due to ITV1's Border franchise area covering southern Scotland.

STV has also said that it plans 300 micro sites covering the towns, cities and rural communities of Scotland.

The plans are part of STV's drive to get public money for Scottish programming with a STV spokesperson saying that nothing would come of these plans is public money was not secured.

STV chief executive, Rob Woodward, told the Royal Television Society's Cambridge Convention on Friday that the plan was an "exciting response for Scottish news in the 21st century and for Scotland as a devolved nation".

Mr Woodward continued: "At the heart of our offering lies a significant addition to consumer choice with coverage that is more relevant for viewers. Our vision adds two new dimensions to STV's existing national news coverage. Firstly, we will present a Scottish perspective on international and UK stories in the same way as Scotland's indigenous press. Secondly we propose to add more local coverage building on the success of our existing micro-regions in Aberdeen, Edinburgh, Glasgow and Dundee."
