ITV says that nearly 20 million people tune in to hear who won the X Factor.

The audience for ITV1 peaked at 19.1 million at 9.15pm when the result was announced , the broadcaster said with unofficial ratings say that 15.5 million watched the two hour show, a share of 53% with a peak of just over 17 million (57%) for the 8.30pm to 8.45pm period.

The figure was way above last year's result and compares with figures of less than 10 million for the show's final in 2004 and 2005. However, it was slightly down on the 19.2 million who tuned in for the result of Britain's Got Talent.

1.8 million people stayed with X Factor when it transferred to ITV2 although 10 million stayed with ITV1 to watch a programme about Susan Boyle called " I Dreamed A Dream - The Susan Boule Story."

Figures for BBC1's showpeace Sports Personality wards show suffered with 4.7 million (17%) tuning in. This was down nearly two million on last year.

Overall, The X Fctor was watched by an average of more than 12 million and has been a massive boost financially for ITV. ITV was expected to have scheduled around 90 commercials into the two programmes shown over the weekend and is expected to have netted £18 million from those commercials with some 30 second spots costing £250,000. This is on top of the money from the phone vote.
